Keith Moreland built a highly productive 12-year Major League Baseball career (1978–1989) defined by his rugged versatility and consistent run-producing bat. Nicknamed "Zonk," he broke into the majors as a catcher with the Philadelphia Phillies, hitting .333 during the 1980 World Series to help the franchise capture its first world championship. Ahead of the 1982 season, Moreland was traded to the Chicago Cubs, where his career truly took off as he transitioned into a reliable corner outfielder and infielder. He became a fixture in the middle of a potent Chicago lineup, helping the team secure the 1984 NL East division title and logging a spectacular 1985 campaign where he batted .307 with a career-high 106 RBIs. Moreland reached a personal peak of 27 home runs while playing third base for the Cubs in 1987 before rounding out his career with stints playing for the San Diego Padres, Detroit Tigers, and Baltimore Orioles. He retired after the 1989 season with 1,279 hits, 121 home runs, 674 RBIs, and a strong .279 lifetime batting average, later returning to Wrigley Field as a popular color analyst for the Cubs radio network.
