Description

1909 VDB Lincoln Head Cent - Rare Low Mint - Very fine condition, see photos. Own the coin that launched a legend with the 1909 VDB Lincoln Head Cent, the inaugural issue of the longest-running design in United States history. Released to commemorate the centennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, this penny marked a revolutionary shift as the first circulating U.S. coin to feature a real person. Designed by renowned sculptor Victor David Brenner, the coin’s reverse prominently displays his initials, "V.D.B.," at the base. This "conspicuous" placement sparked immediate public outcry and a media frenzy, leading the Mint to remove the initials just days after release. This short-lived controversy transformed the VDB variety into an instant souvenir and an eternal favorite for numismatists. While the Philadelphia issue is the most accessible way to own this history, it remains a "must-have" cornerstone for every Lincoln Wheat series collector.
